About the Project
Villa Serene emerges from a profound dialogue between centuries-old Syrian courtyard traditions and contemporary architectural sensibilities. Situated on a gently sloping site overlooking the ancient city, the design embraces the inward-looking typology that has defined regional domestic architecture for millennia, while reinterpreting it through a modern lens. The central courtyard serves not merely as an organizational device but as the spiritual heart of the residence, creating a microclimate that moderates the harsh Mediterranean sun and channels cooling breezes through the living spaces.
The material palette speaks directly to the surrounding landscape. Local limestone, quarried from the same geological formations that built the old city, forms the primary facade material, its warm honey tones shifting throughout the day as light angles change. Interior spaces feature polished concrete floors that retain coolness during summer months, while cedar wood elements reference the traditional craftsmanship of Syrian woodworkers. The interplay of shadow and light becomes architectural in itself, with deep overhangs and strategically placed apertures creating ever-changing patterns across interior walls.
Beyond its aesthetic achievements, Villa Serene pioneers sustainable living strategies adapted to the regional climate. Passive cooling techniques eliminate the need for conventional air conditioning during most of the year. A sophisticated rainwater harvesting system feeds the courtyard garden, while photovoltaic panels integrated into the roofline generate surplus electricity. The residence demonstrates that environmentally responsible architecture need not compromise on luxury or spatial generosity, offering its inhabitants a sanctuary that feels simultaneously timeless and thoroughly contemporary.
